Conservation awareness

OMCAR Palk bay Center has been carrying out conservation awareness programs across coastal villages in Thanjavur and Pattukkottai districts for people from all age groups from School level to Village level to promote conservation of the Palk Bay coast and its ecosystem.

Schools are where young generations of the local community can be reached to spread conservation messages. So, OMCAR has been working with Schools through District Eco-Clubs and National Green Corps to organise dugong, seagrass, mangroves and sustainable fishery awareness events.

One-day events are the follow-up of our school visits, and we invite the school students to visit our centre for expanding their consciousness and awareness of how beautiful our oceans, local plants and animals are.

Coastal cleanup

Every year we select tourist spots such as Manora beach and invite volunteers from local colleges to participate in beach clean-up activities. The trash is collected and transported to Pattukkottai waste management centre located about 22 km from the shoreline where all the waste is given for proper disposal.

Nature camps are similar to one-day trips but as it is over 2 days, children stay and spend more time amid nature attaining holistic knowledge about the coastal ecosystems.

We used to carry out guided field trips to the Muthupet mangrove forest but we restricted it due to safety issues. We soon plan to have similar field trips but in a more safer environment.

Village-level programs are mostly informal meetings and rarely presentation sessions. Most of the time, these village-level meetings are organised to understand the needs of local fishers.

Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing (NETFISH) is a registered society formed under the aegis of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) with a view to imparting knowledge to fishermen/ fisherwomen/ processing workers, technicians, etc. in fish quality management, conservation of fish resources as well as sustainable fishing.
