Laboratory Training Programme on Ornamental Fish Hathchery for

               FARMC members and Fisher Women Representatives 


 
          

            On 20th August 2009, a team of fisher women representatives from coastal villages of Thanjavur District were visited Hatchery cum Research Laboratory of Centre of Advansed Study in Marine Biology, Annamalai University. This programme was organized by OMCAR Foundation with CAS in Marine Biology as a follow up of the previous One Day Training Programme that held in Pattukkottai in May 2009.

FARMC member villages were informed by OMCAR Foundation which are represented by women groups.  OMCAR Foundation has been improving the awreness on depletion of coastal resources and to find the alternative livelihood support for the fisher women in Thanjavur District.

             The women self help group members of OMCAR foundation have visited the Marine ornamental fish hatchery of Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology, Annamalai University. As directed by Prof. T. Balasubramanian, Director of this centre, Prof. K. Kathiresan addressing the gathering about the genesis of the centre. Followed, Dr. T. T. Ajith Kumar delivered a lead lecture on the hatchery production of clown fishes as an alternate livelihood option to the coastal folk. He also explained about the back yard hatchery operation methods and the financial schemes of M.P.E.D.A.  The entrepreneurs actively participated in the discussion and also visited the demonstration hatchery.              
 
          Dr. A. Anantharaman, Faculty member of the centre has explained the methods of seaweed culture and its medicinal and commercial value.  He insisted the value of the seaweed resources and the role of fisher women in Palk Bay involving in sea weed culture.

WORLD OCEAN DAY - COASTAL CLEANUP PROGRAMME , 8th JUNE, 2010
World ocean day was celebrated by OMCAR Foundation on 8th June 2010 at Manora coastal village, Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. OMCAR organized the 24 volunteers of nearby school students (11th standard and 12th standard) to participate in the coastal cleanup programme on behalf of the World Ocean Day Celebration.
THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY 22 May 2010
OMCAR Foundation has participated in the international Biodiversity Day organized by Tami Nadu Forest Department on 22nd May 2010. Village people, women self help group members, Village forest committee members and forest officials were participated in the event that held at Point Calimere. Dr. Balaji, Director of OMCAR Foundation has delivered a lecture on the value of biodiversity in sustainable economic development.
